Cellphones have become integral to our lives and are constantly gaining additional functionality. If Hyundai gets its way, our smartphones will replace vehicle keys as early as 2015. With its MirrorLink system, your phone will unlock your car with a simple swipe over a near-field communication (NFC) chip in the vehicle’s body. You then wirelessly charge your phone on an inductive-charging mat in the centre console. The vehicle is then ready to be started. Another advantage of MirrorLink is that the user interface of the phone, including apps, will be mirrored on the central display screen. As the system recognises different smartphones, the vehicle will among other functions customise the display, seat and mirror positions. This will also mean that car owners can customise the design of the infotainment interface. Theft and flat batteries do remain obstacles, however.
