Under the General Motors umbrella, there is a vehicle for everyone – from hatchbacks, to saloons, to SUVs and bakkies. However, the company hasn’t had an MPV in South Africa since the Opel Zafira. Until now.
The Chevrolet Orlando is now available locally. With a 1,8-litre engine and two specification levels, the company is confident this is the perfect vehicle for families that have a “go anywhere” lifestyle.
Chevrolet is targeting the Orlando at buyers who have medium to large families requiring space and versatility in a MPV package. It believes that “the distinctive Chevrolet style and comfort of the Orlando will please those who see it as a more upscale choice”.
Space is, of course, important in a vehicle such as this. The Orlando has three rows of seats and can accommodate up to seven passengers. To gain access to the rear seats, the second row tumbles forward for easy access. Should these rear seats not be occupied, the third row can fold completely flat to provide more luggage space.
Under the bonnet is a 1,8-litre four-cylinder that has a maximum output of 104 kW at 6 200 r/min and 176 N.m of torque at 3 800 r/min. Fuel consumption is a claimed 7,2 litres/100 km, and it has a taxable CO2 rating of 171g/km.
Standard features on the entry-level LS include air-conditioning, an audio system with MP3-compatibilty and an auxiliary input, front and rear foglamps, a rake and reach adjustable steering column, all electric windows, and steering wheel-mounted controls. The LT specification grade adds climate control, auto headlamp control, and an automatic anti-dazzle rear view mirror.
Both models come equipped with front, side and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, traction control, central locking and Isofix anchorages. For a full specification list, click on the documents tab in the top right-hand-corner of the image box.
