Chrysler Grand Voyager

Now in its third generation, the Chrysler Grand Voyager continues in its quest for glory in the MPV segment with brilliant interior packaging and a multitude of features that make it more like a family home on wheels.

Overall, the looks are a far cry from what usually distinguishes this segment. Gone are the boxy proportions typical of vehicles like these, replaced by a sleek look complete with all the right touches to the headlamp, taillight, and grille to create a strong, upmarket appearance.

The innovative Stow ‘n Go seating system is the Grand Voyager’s trump card. Using a 2:2:3 seating arrangement, there is 424 dm3 of boot space behind the rearmost seats if items are stacked to the top of the backrests. Pulling a couple of straps releases the rearmost seat down into a bathtub-shaped compartment, resulting in a flat floor and a huge 1 160 dm3 of load volume.

This still leaves four individual seats, all with folding armrests and the second row facing fold-away trays in the back of the front seats. The middle two armchairs offer added comfort and, with head restraints and armrests retracted, can also be tumbled into covered compartments in the floor to free up a van-like 2 720 dm3.

Upholstery is a stain-repellent, anti-static cloth. The driver’s seat is electrically adjustable and the steering wheel is manually adjustable for rake and reach.

The extensive features list includes electrically-operated sliding doors and tailgate that opens via a button on the key fob. Drinkholders are provided for all rear seat passengers and there is also a panoramic mirror located in the overhead sunglasses holder.

Another unique feature is the MyGIG audio system that includes, apart from a six-CD front loader, a 30 GB hard drive for storing music downloaded from a flash drive into the USB port. Both touch screen and voice commands can be used to switch between the different media. Customers can also specify the optional MyGIG infotainment package that includes two DVD screens, one each for the second and third seat rows, including satellite navigation and rear-view camera.

Two engines are available, a 3,8-litre V6 petrol unit and a 2,8-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel. The V6 produces 142 kW at 5 200 r/min and 305 N.m of torque at 4 000 r/min. Mated with a six-speed six-speed automatic gearbox, Chrysler claims is capable of a 193 km/h top speed. The turbodiesel produces 120 kW at 3 800 r/min and 360 N.m of torque at 1 600 r/min.
