Citroën South Africa is using SA’s leading motor show to showcase the extent of its commitment to the local market. On display is the French firm’s entire product line-up, which has grown somewhat over the last few years. Models from the C range and premium DS Line offering as well as the recently homologated and Santaco approved mini bus taxis are all on show.
C4 Picasso
The newest model on show is the new C4 Picasso multi-purpose vehicle which is due for launch here in 2014. The new Citroën C4 Picasso will be launched with the marque’s e-HDi 115 turbodiesel engine. Developing 85 kW, it will be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and generates only 105 gm of CO2/km.
The facia is uncluttered and is structured around two screens located in the central section: a 7-inch touch pad and 12-inch panoramic HD screen. The latter displays essential driving information and can be configured by the driver at any time to show data for either the navigation system or driving aids.
Cactus concept
More striking than the production models is the Cactus concept car. This dramatic SUV model design study previews forthcoming models in the C Line. Notable styling features are the so-called “airbumps”, which are panels on the body covered by a soft skin featuring air capsules that protect the body and add to visual appeal.
Inside, a slender floating facia frees up space on the floor below and on its upper section offers the front passenger a large storage space with easy access. The driver interface is fully digital, featuring an 8-inch touchscreen connected to all vehicles functions such as air conditioning, audio, navigation, connected services and driver aids. The traditional gear lever is replaced with push button controls on the dashboard and steering wheel paddles.
GQ Concept
Another head turner is the GQ concept conceived in conjunction with GQ magazine. Based on the DS3, Citroën’s design team created a new look at the Grand Touring (GT) theme. Saville Row’s finest were consulted for exterior and interior treatment. It is powered by a plug-in hybrid power train using a 1,6-litre direct injection petrol engine and electric motor .
“It is not an all-out sports car, but rather something gentlemanly in that it has performance for travelling and not racing,” explained lead designer Mark Lloyd.
