One motorist, Wayne van Tonder, told the newspaper that he was held in a police cell for more than five hours for a R500 fine issued two and a half years ago for using a cellphone while driving.
Johannesburg Metro Police spokesman CC Mackay told
CARtoday.com that this was part of an ongoing campaign to ensure that fines were not just pieces of paper to be ignored, but part of an effort to enforce traffic regulations.
“We will be targeting different areas at different times, depending on where the biggest number of defaulters are based. But we will be doing it frequently.
“This past weekend we concentrated on Johannesburg central, as well as the eastern and southern suburbs.
“We collected more than R65 000 in outstanding fines,” Mackay said.
