Clever wipers

Mercedes-Benz has introduced a special wiper system for its new SL-Class called Magic Vision Control. This intelligent, highly efficient wiper/washer system supplies water to the windscreen through channels in the wiper blades just in front of the blade and in the direction of movement. Therefore, the driver’s vision is no longer impaired by a splash of water on the windscreen before it is wiped down by the wiper system.

The Mercedes-Benz system has three autonomous wash programmes (seasonal) from which to choose and, depending on the ambient temperature and current road speed, decides which one to employ. A further enhancement is that, when the system detects that the roof is folded away, it will reduce the water supply and wash only on the downward stroke of the blades to avoid water reaching the interior.

Another innovative aspect of this system is the fully integrated heating capability. Not only is the water preheated in a container using excess coolant heat, but also the lines running to the wipers and the blades themselves. To achieve this, each blade is equipped with a heater foil (35 W) that prevents snow and ice from sticking to the blade, which also ensures that the rubber remains supple in winter. This option is aimed at markets with extremely cold climates.
