Chevrolet has just unveiled the 2012 Cobalt, which in line with the firm’s global car strategy, will make it to more than 40 markets worldwide, including Europe, South America, the Middle East, and Africa.
It’s obvious to see that this model would slot in just below the Cruze, but it’s even more interesting to note that the GM design department hasn’t really stood still – though its face is familiar, the Cobalt features a rather oddball shape – quite unlike the sleek shape that made the previous Cobalt Coupe (North American) a budget-beating performance hero.
Inside, the Cobalt is similar to other models that feature a prominent bowtie badge, with an instrument cluster that combines digital and analogue elements, three-spoke steering wheel and a new trump card – 18 storage compartments besides the boot.
Under the bonnet, there are four engines that potentially could power the Cobalt – ranging in size from 1,3- to 1,8-litre units.
Asked when we could expect to see the Cobalt in South Africa, General Motor’s SA product communications manager Caroline Thomas said that “there are no currently plans to launch the Cobalt sedan in South Africa, but this vehicle will be launched in various Sub-Saharan markets during 2012.”
