Continental Tyres is producing the first road tyre to be certified for speeds up to 360 km/h, and locally is manufacturing a dynamic high performance tyre for both local and export markets.
The ContiSportContact 2 Vmax tyre is able to operate at speeds up to 360 km/h continuously, and four sizes are available. For extra-quick executive saloons, there are the 245/35 ZR19XL and 275/30 ZR19XL, while 235/35 ZR19XL and 315/25 ZR19 are available for traditional high performance cars.
Previously, the maximum speed symbol rating “Y” for tyres allowed for speeds of up to 300 km/h. The ContiSportContact2 Vmax tyres are available by special request through Continental’s national dealer network.
Meanwhile, the company’s Port Elizabeth plant is manufacturing a high performance, ultra-low profile road tyre for both the local and export market.
A new Silica BiNEt tread compound uses macro elements to provide maximum high speed rigidity and micro elements that respond to stresses, providing flexibility for greater traction under harsh braking conditions.
The new ContiSportContact 2 tyres – 225/45 R17 and the 245/40 R17 with a speed Symbol of W (270 kmh) – have dynamic contour control that remains constant at high speeds to provide full tread contact. This optimises traction, reduces uneven tread wear and extends the tyre life.
Bionic contour allows for footprint variations in the tread contact area from a narrow and long footprint for high speed driving, to a flat and wide footprint when cornering or when great braking forces are applied.
