Using the R 1200 C as a platform, BMW South Africa has introduced the R 1200 CL motorcycle, with an emphasis on luxury and comfort.
The luxury cruiser features an elegant tourer fairing attached to the handlebars.
On both sides of the front fairing are additional air deflection profiles that provide further wind deflection and rider protection.
New additional trim parts on the tank are optimally integrated in the R 1200CL line, shielding the rider’s legs. The kneepads facing the rider’s knees are upholstered.
The front trim panel features four integrated headlights, which consist of two low-beam headlights and two high-beam headlights. The new headlight unit can be reset easily by hand wheel (or snatch lever). The R 1200 CL also has an automatic indicator reset.
The R 1200 CL handlebars are specially adapted to suit the ergonomics and design of the motorcycle. It also has a generous rider saddle, optimised ergonomically with integrated pelvis support as well as the comfortable pillion seat. There is rubber support on the running boards and wide pillion foot rests derived from the K 1200 LT.
Powered by a two-cylinder four-stroke Boxer, it has power output of 45 kW at 5 000 r/min and a maximum torque 98 N.m at 3 000 r/min. It has a claimed maximum speed of about 165 km/h.
The tank capacity is 17,5 litres and BMW gives the fuel consumption at 90 km/h as 5,1 litres and at 100 km/h as 6,2 litres.
A completely new spring strut has been used for the rear wheel guide, together with a WAD shock absorber that ensures the rear suspension becomes progressively harder when compressed. The rear suspension travel has increased by 20 mm compared with the R 1200 C, producing a full spring travel of 120 mm. Spring pre-load can be adjusted very easily by means of a hydraulic hand wheel.
The BMW Integral ABS is standard on the R 1200 CL.
Comfort levels are high with heated grips and cruise control. The cruise control system is deactivated by pressing the clutch, brake or by decelerating. The automatically controlled speed can be adjusted to the relevant traffic conditions at any time by pressing the flip switch on the handlebar control.
It is also fitted with a Stereo CD radio housed in a watertight and shock absorbed case on the right that can be operated either directly from the radio operating unit or by means of the simple handlebar remote control, which is already well-known from the K 1200 LT.
In order to create enough room for luggage, in addition to the standard cases and standard top case there is a solid luggage bridge made of aluminium, when the top case is dismantled, which also provides the integrated pillion grab handles.
The R 1200 CL is available in the following colours: Pearl silver metallic, Mojave brown metallic, Capri blue metallic
Price: R139 500.
