Tomas Scheckter is raffling one of his IndyCar helmets in an effort to raise funds to cover the costs of a cochlear implant for his cousin, Jaki Scheckter.
Jaki is a former local Formula Ford champion and won the American Barber Dodge Pro Series in 1995. He is currently a member of the Panther Racing Team for whom Tomas drives and forms part of his cousin’s entourage.
“Jaki was born hearing impaired and had to start using hearing aids when he was only two-years-old,” the IndyCar racer and South African A1 Grand Prix driver Tomas explained. “The cochlear implant surgery is going to give him a better life, and soon he’ll be able to enjoy so many things that most of us take for granted.”
Until the end of the year, Tomas will be raffling off the autographed helmet he wore during the 2004 season in an effort to raise the much-needed funds for his cousin’s cochlear implant.
“It’s a chance for my fans and fans of the IndyCar Series to win one of my racing helmets and help a great cause at the same time,” Scheckter said.
All proceeds will go into a fund to cover Jaki’s medical expenses and post-surgery training. The winner will be drawn on January 2, 2006.
