A Durban man is refusing to pay a speeding fine that clocked him doing 963 km/h – about 40 km/h short of the speed of sound – in his 1989 Toyota Cressida.
reported that Abbubaker Khan was caught speeding in a 80 km/h zone in February. Khan received a summons in the post and said that because of the alleged speed he had been travelling he did not have the option of a fine and had to appear in court.
“I admit that I might have been speeding, but there is no way I could have been travelling that fast even if I wanted to,” he told the newspaper.
“It is a pity that I do not have wings on my car because then they would never have caught me. Even the metro police were astounded at the speed printout and said something must be wrong with their equipment. I told them that they were damn right,” Khan said.
Durban metro police spokesman Steve Edwards said Khan should contact them to see how they could solve the problem. “Maybe we should have a look at his car to see if there have been any slight modifications,” Edwards told .
