The German version of reported that about 500 000 Volkswagen Lupos, Polo and Golf models’ engines had been damaged because of ice forming in the oil circuit.
The manufacturer said in January that it would compensate the owners, but the attorney representing the car owners said they had not received anything so far.
Attorney Jens-Peter Gieschen said that Volkswagen had promised to refund repair costs and offered free servicing. He said he was acting on behalf of 17 clients, who each had repair bills of about R18 000.
“There is a health risk when oil leaks on to a motorway or an engine blows up while driving. According to the law this should result in the manufacturer withdrawing the product,” Gieschen said.
When asked for comment, Volkswagen told the newspaper: “We will provide the service our customers are entitled to but we reject demands which are unreasonable.”
