British ex-F1 driver Anthony Davidson sustained broken vertebrae in a terrifying crash during the Le Mans 24 Hour race. TV viewers were shocked when Davidson’s Toyota’s E8 TS030 Hybrid was clipped by the LMPGTE Ferrari driven by Italy’s Piergiuseppe Perazzini and smashed into the barriers after a spectacular mid-air somersault. Davidson (who can be seen waving his arms while trying to extract himself from his stricken car) was treated by medical staff at the scene and taken to the local hospital.
Although he was initially diagnosed with “suffering from shock and back pains”, Toyota later revealed the 33-year old Briton had sustained fractures to his T11 and T12 vertebrae and that his injuries were expected to heal fully in approximately three months.
“Well that was a big one! Lying in a French hospital with a broken back wasn’t what I had in mind at this stage in the race,” Davidson said on Twitter.
