DaimlerChrylser South Africa has approved a voluntary retirement package deal for 170 of its employees at its plant in East London.
DCSA said the offer, which was accepted by the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa, said it was aimed at employees who wanted to retire early for health reasons or those who wanted to change careers.
“We finished a big contract building Colt pickups for the Telkom fleet in October. We then had to reduce the line by about 30 per cent and had too many workers on it,” said spokesman Deon Ebersohn.
“The deadline for applications was November and we had 170 workers who volunteered, which suited our needs,” he said.
DCSA management board member for human resources Johann Evertse told : “Employees were invited to apply for early retirement, and the applications received were approved subject to operational requirements, such as critical skills, etcetera.”
DCSA first gave details of the offer in October last year. There are 3 800 workers at DCSA.
