The company has joined forces with Occupational Care South Africa (OCSA) to help retired employees who can no longer afford medical aid.
OCSA Regional Manager Cynthia Hunter said the scheme, the first of its kind to be established at a private company in the Eastern Cape, will be available, initially to about 1 000 former Delta and General Motors employees and their spouses.
She said the number of patients treated through the scheme was expected to increase after the start-up phase of the project and as more eligible former employees become aware of the service. The health service is also available to former employees who took early retirement from the company.
Hunter said a full-time nursing sister would help patients from a dedicated out-patient area recently established in the manufacturer’s on-site medical department.
“Beyond the actual treatments available to these people through the Plan, the service will also encompass a large ’preventative component’ in that patients will be exposed to regular education sessions on general health issues and the maintenance of good health.
Delta said that, at present, its more than 1 500-strong pensioner base enjoyed the full-time services of a social worker who conducted home visits to assess needs. The retired staff also have access to a range of other benefits provided by the company.
