Volkswagen SA will introduce a diesel-powered Passat TDI onto the South African market in June. It will cost R255 320.
The Passat TDI utilises the 96 kW 1,9-litre, 4-cylinder diesel motor with pump injector (pumpe duese) technology and a six-speed manual gearbox, slots into the Passat stable that includes the two 1,8T (manual and tiptronic), Passat 2,3 V5 Tiptronic and 2,8 V6 4Motion Tiptronic models available to South African buyers.
“Diesel-engined cars are a growing market segment in South Africa and it stands to reason then that VWSA should offer a TDI in our flagship sedan range,” Volkswagen Sales and Marketing General Manager Bill Stephens said recently.
The 1,9-litre powerplant produces maximum torque of 310 N.m at 1 900 r/min. The Passat TDI is claimed to hit a top speed of 210 km/h with sprint from zero to 100km/h in 9,9 seconds.
VWSA also claim an average combined fuel consumption of 5,7 litres per 100km. In South Africa, the TDI comes with a six-speed manual gearbox and can be recognised by its TDI badge with the “D” and “I” in red and 15-inch alloy wheels.
In terms of occupant protection, the Passat TDI is factory-fitted with two front and two side airbags, the latter integrated in the seat backrests. The Passat is further equipped with ABS, electronic differential lock (EDL), electronic brake pressure distribution system (EBD) and anti-skid regulator (ASR).
The Passat TDI also comes standard with features such as leather seats, cruise control, air-conditioning, electrically adjusted and heated exterior mirrors, electric windows, remote opening of the luggage compartment and tank flap, split/foldable rear seat bench, loading sill protection made from stainless steel, fully-adjustable steering column, power assisted steering, heat-reflective glass as well as central locking with radio wave remote control. Other features include an adjustable centre armrest, a stowage area in the rear centre arm rest and a radio/tape combination.
The Passat TDI is covered by a three-year warranty and 12-year anti-corrosion guarantee. Oil change intervals are every 7 500 km and service intervals every 15 000 km. The Passat TDI is covered by a five-year/60 000 km Volkswagen Automotion Plan.
