Ssang Yong’s 2007 Total Economy Run winning Kyron gets a bit of a facelift as well as a heart transplant in the shape of a frugal diesel engine.
Besides a general tidy-up of its styling, the facelifted Kyron features a new 2,7-litre diesel engine. The third generation turbocharged and intercooled common-rail diesel unit develops 121 kW at 4 000 r/min, while the maximum torque of 340 N.m is available from as low down the rev range as 1 800 r/min.
The automatic transmission stays in the optimal gear for a smoother ride and lower fuel consumption. The Kyron’s 4WD system features a dual range transfer case that allows the engine’s bottom end and midrange torque to be maximised when undertaking steep slopes or muddy conditions. The part-time 4-wheel drive allows the driver to switch from 2WD to 4WD while the vehicle is in gear and on the fly as well. The driving modes are 2H for normal conditions, 4H for unpaved or snowy surfaces, and 4L, used on steep terrain or conditions demanding optimal traction.
Improving the Kyron’s stability and steering control, is a double wishbone suspension set up more commonly used on high-end SUVs and luxury vehicles. Twin arms ensure the best wheel contact on constantly changing surfaces for better driving stability, while precise wheel alignment enhances both stability and handling. Dual action gas-filled shock absorbers, stabiliser bar, lower and upper arms, and coil springs, combine to improve ride comfort.
The ultra modern facia gives the interior a futuristic feel, not to mention the orange instrument panel. All switchgear (T-Tronic, and simple control knob for change from 2WD to 4WD) is easily identifiable and adjustments are easily made. There is more room and storage compartments too. The rear floor is a good example – featuring under-floor storage compartments. The rear seats fold down to create a huge flat cargo space and a luggage cover is also standard.
Safety features include dual airbags, ABS, crumple zones, automatic door lock, remote control ignition key, and an ultra-rigid triple layer steel frame.
The Kyron’s exterior lines have been updated and smoothed out. The headlamp assembly with matching horizontal fog lamps, triple line, chrome plated radiator grille and mesh air intake, 16-inch alloy wheels, and well-balanced rear with an enlarged tailgate glass, complete the package.
