On the final leg of its mission, the Discovery 3’s mettle will be tested in Bolivia in preparation for the final stage of the global adventure competition. It will be the lead vehicle as the party makes its way through the country’s tropical lowlands and into the Andes, about 5 000 metres above sea level, for the challenge’s final.
“In mountainous areas we are encountering flash floods and our route has also taken us on the so-called ‘Death Road’ that runs from the capital, La Paz, to the lowlands,” Richard Beckman, recce team leader and competitions manager said.
“You’re running over some of the roughest road surfaces imaginable, through waterfalls and all the while looking down at drops of up to 1 000 m just inches away.”
All of the Discovery models used in the G4 Challenge will be put through their paces in near-showroom specification, and have been noted by Beckman as great accompaniment to the recce team’s proven fleet of Defenders.
“Anywhere that the Defender goes, the Discovery 3 has been right there too,” Beckman added.
The global challenge is comprised of both urban and rugged stages and, before they reach Bolivia, the 18 international competitors will have travelled through Bangkok and Laos in the new Range Rover Sport and negotiated Rio de Janeiro in the Freelander.
