Late last year, we got to see the much-anticipated Toyota sports coupe, the GT86, reach production status after a bevy of prototypes and altered concepts at the Tokyo Motor Show. Subaru showed of f its BRZ coupe in GT300 racing trim at the same show, but American sister company Scion has also joined in on the madness.
Scion has also unveiled its own version of the 86, the FR-S – but the model turning heads at the Detroit Motor Show is undoubtedly the project between Scion Racing and aftermarket parts firm Greddy – which will feature in this year’s Formula Drift Championship with Ken Gushi at the helm.
It’s well known by now that the car (no matter which badge is positioned up front) is powered by a normally-aspirated horizontally-opposed four-cylinder producing just under 150 kW. This is by no means enough to properly contest a drift competition, so thanks to forced induction and other modifications it will end up producing in the region of 450 kW.
Apart from Greddy performance bits, the Formula Drift FR-S will also boast parts from Cosworth, KW Suspension, Sparco and Rays.
