This festive season, drivers caught drunk behind the wheel should prepare themselves for some stiff penalties – six years in jail, a R120 000 fine or both.

This was decided in a meeting between the Minister of Transport, Dullah Omar, the transport MECs, representatives from the bus, taxi and trucking industries and Arrive Alive.

A spokesperson for Arrive Alive said that those at the meeting agreed that maximum law enforcement had to be applied for driving under the influence of alcohol, and a six-year jail sentence, R120 000 fine or both can be expected.

According to the , Ndivhuwo Mabaya, spokesperson for the Transport Ministry, has said that this is to complement Operation Juggernaut, whose mission is to remove all unroadworthy taxis and heavy vehicles from the roads over the holiday period.
