As CARtoday.com reported last month, the Ferrari “mentioned” to the FIA that the front Michelin tyres, which were used by rival teams Williams-BMW and McLaren-Mercedes, were possibly wider than the regulations permitted. But speaking to this week, Di Montezemolo said the complaint was “a normal procedure” and that his team never wanted to disrupt the championship.
“We could have lodged a formal complaint with the FIA after the Hungarian Grand Prix, but it would have been harmful for the championship and that’s the only reason why we didn’t do it,” said Montezemolo. “It is a normal procedure in F1. All the teams regularly ask for technical explanations from the FIA.”
Crucially, the Ferrari president said that Ferrari would not contest the results of previous races in this year’s championship (in which Michelin-shod teams had used the controversial tyres).
Di Montezemolo said Ferrari would not invoke article 179b of the sporting regulation to contest the past results (leading up to the Italian Grand prix), as team boss Jean Todt and technical director Ross Brawn had suggested. “We will not look back on the past, we only want to look forward,” he said.
