Nissan South Africa has retained its internationally-recognised SABS ISO 14001 certification for environmental management at its plants.
This was confirmed after a recent surveillance audit by the South African Bureau of Standards.
The ISO14001 standard for environmental management systems, which is reportedly mandatory for most South African manufacturers, is generally used as a benchmark and certification is awarded on the basis of company practice.
It requires that each part of the supply chain is evaluated for its effect on the environment, and that this effect be reduced as far as possible.
In addition, Nissan recently received another NOSCAR five star award from NOSA – the 23rd year in a row that Nissan has achieved the award for safety, health and the environment.
"ISO 9002, ISO 14001 and the NOSCAR five-star award are a reflection of Nissan’s commitment to quality, safety, health and the environment,” said Mike Whitfield, executive vice-president of Nissan SA.
Nissan said it has also reduced the use of heavy furnace oil from 33 650 litres a month to 1 645 litres a month. The use of bulk propane gas has been replaced by Sasol pipeline gas, which is hydrogen rich. In 2004 the hydrogen rich gas will be replaced with natural earth gas, which is even more environmentally friendly.
"We will also encourage our dealers and suppliers to implement environmental management systems in their companies," Whitfield said.
