The new all-wheel drive Volvo S60 R has been launched in South Africa and promises to add muscle and zest to the classy executive saloon range.
It is equipped with an active performance chassis using Four-C Technology (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept) that controls the performance of the car by a simple press of a button. Featuring three settings, Comfort, Sport and Advanced Sport, the car is claimed to adapt to almost any driving style or road condition.
The S60R’s five-cylinder 2,5-litre in-line turbocharged engine is the most powerful engine in the Volvo range and produces 220 kW at 5 250 r/min and 400 N.m of torque between 1 950 and 5 250 r/min. That, Volvo claims, places the R engine among the market leaders in terms of power output per litre of cylinder volume. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h and the S60 R accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5,7 seconds with a manual gearbox.
“The previous R model’s major signatures were their colour and their wheels. Changes to the body, however, were limited. This time, we have increased the differentiation by giving it a totally new front,” said Peter Horbury, Premier Automotive Group (PAG) executive director of design.
At the front, the S60 R’s grille has a frame in satin silver, the spoiler has been extended and the lower air intake is larger to provide increased airflow and more efficient cooling. The launch colours are called flash green and titanium grey. The new R is also available in four additional colours: black metallic, silver metallic, cosmos blue metallic and passion red solid.
Inside, The interior the sport seats have increased side support and are available in three colours: dark blue, gold beige and natural aniline leather, all with unique stitching.
The leather dashboard visor has blue stitching, matching the chronograph-inspired instruments with their R-blue faces. The characteristic R-blue colour is repeated in the engine and cam belt covers. The intake manifold has a designed cover with aluminium finish and the R logo while the aluminium finish is repeated in the charge air pipe from the turbo.
