Mercedes-Benz continues to drip feed us with updates on the forthcoming facelifted E-Class. We first reported on the updated model last month followed by a video of the Coupé and the Cabriolet.
Now the Stuttgart-based company has released details of the mighty E63 AMG super saloon. Mercedes-Benz also confirmed that the E63 will for the first time feature the manufacturer’s 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. There is another obvious advantage to this system, a significant gain in traction, reflected in AMG’s claimed 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 3,7 seconds. This should pitch the E63 AMG squarely at the all-wheel-drive Porsche Panamera Turbo.
The rear-wheel drive version will hit 100 km/h 4,2 seconds. These increases in performance are due to the 5,5-litre V8 turbocharged unit that now develops 410 kW at 5 500 r/min and 720 N.m at 1 750 r/min. If you have an even bigger budget for tyres, customers can opt for the S-model lifting peak power to 430 kW and 800 N.m!
This 4Matic modification for the E63 AMG is in-line with the plan outlined by Friedrich Eichlers, the head of engines and powertrains at AMG, to introduce more four-wheel-drive AMGs in the near future.
Expect the first E-Class models to arrive in South Africa during the second or third quarter of 2013.
