reported that the Vukuzakhe Roads Maintenance Programme was launched in Willowvale, last week, by Eastern Cape Premier Makhenkesi Stofile and roads and public works MEC Gloria Barry.
Roads and public works spokesman Andile Fekisi said the department would supply equipment such as orange warning cones, wheelbarrows, pickaxes, shovels and machetes to people working on the project.
Each household will work on a kilometre of the road and be paid R400 per month. Of that, R40 will go into a savings account.
The system will also be intoduced in the Tambo, Amathole, Ukhahlamba, Chris Hani and Alfred Nzo district municipalities.
Fekisi said the job included grass cutting, filling potholes and cleaning and maintaining drains and waterways. The programme will concentrate on giving contracts to households headed by single mothers.
The department has set aside R14 million in its 2003/4 budget for the programme.
