Schumacher went off at the 225 km/h turn 11 at the end of the morning session, badly damaging the back end of his F2001. Later in the day, Barrichello crashed heavily at Turn Nine, and with no spare chassis available, the team was forced to abandon the test.
Ferrari, who nevertheless clocked the day’s best times, will do no testing at the track on Thursday. Neither drivers suffered physical injuries. The two cars have been sent straight back to Maranello for repairs, which cannot be carried out in the Barcelona pits.
“I’m perfectly alright after the accident,” Schumacher was quoted as saying by . “What happened was that I made a mistake and lost control of the car.
Unfortunately, we cannot continue with the test, as Rubens also had a crash and there are no other cars available here in Barcelona.”
Barrichello’s accident was also a case of driver error, Autosport.com reported. The Brazilian nevertheless set the fastest time of the day.
Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld continued to impress to be the fastest non-Ferrari for the second day in a row. The German reported that he was very happy with progress in the new C21 after completing a successful race simulation.
Williams BMW’s Ralf Schumacher was slower than his team’s test driver Marc Gene, but quicker than team-mate Juan-Pablo Montoya.
Rising German Marcel Lasee put in a good performance as he continued his maiden F1 test with Jordan. He finished just behind Sauber rookie Felipe Massa, who spun in the afternoon while attempting a race simulation.
Jarno Trulli reported some disatisfaction with his Michelin tyres as he continues to acclimatise himself with the Renault team. He is due to have his first run in the new R202 chassis tomorrow.
