Fiat Auto SA has secured another export contract worth about R250 million supplying its Italian plants with catalytic converter components for the latest models from Fiat and Alfa Romeo.
The company’s Cape Town-based supplier, Arvin Meritor has been awarded the contract to supply components that will be used in the Fiat Croma, the next-generation Fiat Punto and the new Alfa 159.
The first phase of the deal commences immediately and 100 000 components will be shipped annually from Arvin Meritor’s local factory to its main plant on Germany for sub-assembly. From there, it will be distributed to the vehicle manufacturer’s various plants in Italy.
Presently, these components are only used in diesel derivatives, but it is possible that the catalytic converter components will be included in petrol units as well.
The latest announcement comes on the back of the subsidiary’s notice two weeks ago that it would be exporting heat shields to Fiat’s Cassino plant for use on the Croma’s exhaust system.
