The launch of the upgraded Fiat Grande Punto range sees the introduction of two new engines to enhance power and performance, as well as small changes to the Italian car’s interior. It might look similar to its predecessor, but the 1,4 16V Starjet and theBy Kelly Lodewyks
The most evident interior change is definitely the new cloth trims. It comes in a darker shade than in the original Grande Punto range and MY2007’s neutral colour schemes are bound to hold broader appeal. Other interior changes are the revised instrument dials, soft-touch centre insert on the dashboard and stainless steel-look finishes on the door handles, glove box latch and even the handbrake release button.
Now comes the part that really matters… performance. How do these new models measure up to those that paved the way before them?
The 1,4 16V Starjet is said to offer better fuel consumption than the 1.4 8V, reduced exhaust emissions, and – more power! While the eight valve-unit produced 57 kW, the 16V delivers 70 kW and Fiat Auto SA claims the newcomer will sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 11,4 secs and achieve a top speed of 178 km/h, compared with the eight-valve unit’s 165 km/h maximum velocity, and the relatively pedestrian 13,2 seconds it took to complete the benchmark acceleration run!
The new 66 kW 1,3-litre 16V Multijet diesel does not fail to impress either. Compared with its predecessor, drivers will recognize the improved response and torque delivery by virtue of the 16V Multijet’s variable geometry turbocharger. The previous JTD had a top speed of 165 km/h and a zero to 100 km/h sprint time of 13,6 seconds, but the claims for the newcomer are 175 km/h and 11,9 seconds. The most important change though, is peak torque of 200 N.m at 1750 r/min.
The standard specification on both the (Dynamic spec) new models is quite comprehensive. These include air-conditioning, a six-speaker stereo with front loader CD, height-adjustable driver’s seat, electric mirrors and front windows, height-adjustable power steering, trip computer, rear headrests and interior adjustable headlamps. Some of the safety features include ABS and EBD, six airbags (located at the front, side and head of the car), remote central locking with immobilizer and rear fog lamps (front fog lamps are optional).
The 1,4 16V Starjet and the 1,3 16V Multijet diesel are sold with a five-year/90 000 km service plans and the intervals are the same as other Grande Punto models – every 30 000 km. A 24-month, unlimited mileage manufacturer warranty, 12-month dealer extended warranty of up to 100 000 km in total, three years on paintwork and five years on rust anti-perforation and 12-month AA Fleetcare roadside assistance are included.
