Fiat has decided to make its 500 Cabriolet a more affordable proposition by offering a 1,2-litre version that it claims is the cheapest new drop-top in the local market.
The Fiat 500 1,2 Cabriolet undercuts its 1,4-litre sibling by more than R30 000, weighing in at a reasonable R175 000.
Given the modest outputs of 51 kW and 102 kW developed by this new model’s 1,2-litre petrol engine, performance is likely to be leisurely. A lack of blistering speed probably won’t worry those wishing to be seen and the average fuel consumption figure of 6,4 litres/100km and emission tax-dodging 119 g/km CO2 output further helps its wallet-friendly credentials.
Equipment levels are generous with such items as seven airbags, ABS with EBD, remote central locking, electric windows, power steering, air-conditioning, daytime running lights, exterior temperature sensor and an MP3-compatible CD audio system with USB and Fiat’s Blue&Me voice-actuated Bluetooth system fitted as standard.
Among this models standard exterior features are 15-inch alloy wheels, electrically adjustable wing mirrors and chromed door handles.
The automatic electric soft top can be controlled either by buttons near to the interior ceiling light or from a remote control. In addition, the soft top can be operated throughout its horizontal travel (as far as the spoiler) at any speed. Vertical movement can be engaged at any speed under 60 km/h.
The Fiat 500 1,2 Cabriolet comes with a five-year/90 000 km service plan (services are every 30 000 km), a three-year/100 000 km warranty and 12 months AA Fleetcare roadside assistance.
