Fiat has released details on its new Freemont crossover – the first Fiat vehicle to come out of the partnership between the Italian company and the Chrysler group.
Although Fiat claims that the Freemont is “built on the base of the Dodge Journey,” it is quite obvious that this vehicle is essentially a re-badged version of the American people-mover, albeit with minor tweaks to some exterior bits, the suspension and steering set-up.
When put next to the Dodge Journey, the most apparent differences include modified bumpers, a revised grille and a redesigned rear end that now includes LED tail lamps. Interior differences include an all-new wrap-around facia.
In an attempt to improve dynamics, the Fiat Freemont will feature a “special suspension and steering configuration for greater accuracy and directness”.
All Freemont models will initially be front-wheel driven and will only be available with two turbodiesel powertrains that have outputs of 104 kW and 126 kW, respectively. These units will be mated with a manual gearbox. Later 4×4 versions with 126 kW 2,0 MultiJet and 205 kW 3,6-litre engines will become available. Drive will be sent to all four wheels via an automatic transmission.
There will be two ways to outfit the Freemont. Both trim levels will offer seven seats, automatic climate control, keyless entry, cruise control, a tyre pressure monitoring system, fog lights and a touch-screen sound system. The higher of the two specification levels will add 17-inch alloys, an SD card and DVD reader, Bluetooth compatibility, rear park distance sensors, fold-down door mirrors, and automatic headlight activation.
Standard safety features include seven airbags, ABS with brake assist, ESP with hill-hold and electronic roll mitigation.
The new Fiat Freemont will make its international debut at next month’s Geneva Motor Show.
