We have known for a while that Porsche is working on new four-cylinder engines. These engines will be – in true Porsche tradition – horizontally opposed, but, it will be turbocharged.
Now Car magazine UK has confirmed the specifications for these engines. According to a story published on their website, the three new engines’ capacity will range from an entry-level 1,6-litre to a 2,0-litre and finally a 2,5-litre engine.
Delivering 157 kW, 213 kW and 268 kW respectively, these engines will be mated to either a six-speed manual gearbox or Porsche’s seven-speed PDK transmission.
It is rumoured that the Boxster, Cayman and Cayenne will receive these engines first, although we can’t imagine that Porsche would implement a 1,6-litre engine in its Boxster and Cayman sportscars.
However, a 213 kW engine will be right in the middle, in terms of power output, of the current Boxster/Cayman range’s entry-level 2,7-litre and top-of-the range 3,4-litre naturally-aspirated engines.
