Ford will begin what could be the second largest tyre recall in the United States after reports of tyres losing their tread on the manufacturer’s sport-utility vehicles.
Continental has announced that it would replace more than half a million tyres. The tyre company will carry the cost of the recall.
Ford recently recalled millions of Firestone tyres on its Explorer SUV because of tread separation. This caused roll-overs and led to a number of accidents, injuries and deaths. The recall cost the company about R33 million.
The recalled Continental tyres were installed on 2000 and 2001 models of the Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators. In addition, about 60 000 tyres were sold as replacement tyres on other SUVs. The tyres were manufactured between March 1999 and October 2000.
