After months of speculation, during which myriad spy shots and renderings of the new model have floated about the web, Ford has finally confirmed that it will be launching an all-new Focus RS. And for the very first time, the most hardcore Focus will be available in all markets around the world.
Unfortunately, the Blue Oval hasn’t quite let slip any details of the upcoming model. CAR did run a story in the September 2014 issue that the range-topper will be powered by a turbocharged 2,3-litre, four-cylinder EcoBoost engine and sources within Ford claim the newcomer’s peak power output will be roughly 250 kW, placing it right up there with the M235i and Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG. Initial indications are that the RS will keep the same FWD layout as before, which means it will be equipped with a torque-steer alleviating suspension as well as a limited slip differential.
More on the way
Ford also announced that the all-new Focus RS will be one of more than a dozen new performance vehicles the firm will release over the next five years.
“Ford remains committed to innovation through performance,” says Raj Nair, Ford’s group vice president, Global Product Development. “Through our global Ford Performance team that ties together racing, performance vehicles, and parts, we can more quickly bring to market products and accessories that meet the needs of customers around the world on-road and on the track.”
“To earn the RS badge, the vehicle has to be a no-compromise driver’s car that can deliver exceptional performance on the track when required while providing excellent everyday driving,” Nair said.
“Ford still races for the same reasons Henry Ford did in 1901 – to prove our products and technologies against the very best in the world,” Nair said. “The Ford Performance team will continue to pursue performance innovation, ensuring we can deliver even more coveted performance cars, utilities and trucks to customers around the world.”
