Glass Sport Motors produced two of the true South African sportscars, the Dart and its hardtop sibling, the Flamingo. In the September issue of CAR you can read a driving impression of the standard Flamingo, in celebration of this model’s 50th anniversary.
But while regular models were powered by four-pot motors sourced from Ford saloons the company once toyed with the idea of a V8-powered Flamingo. GSM dropped the V8 lump from a Ford Fairmont into the 890 kg little car. With a power quoted at 122 kW the resultant acceleration time of 7,2 seconds from standstill to 60 mph was blisteringly quick for the time.
Only one prototype was made and CAR was lucky enough to run a full road test on the rare machine.
