Porsche has almost always set new benchmarks for CAR’s performance testing procedures. Especially the Turbo models. But this legacy began more than 30 years ago when we tested the 930 Turbo in January 1982.
With very little departure in the looks department from the original 911 – launched 17 years earlier – the 930 Turbo didn’t shout out its credentials save for the “whale-tail” rear spoiler – a necessity to feed extra air into the engine and provide much needed downforce at the rear end. The 930 was powered by a turbocharged 3,0-litre horizontally-opposed six-cylinder engine that produced 221 kW at 5 500 r/min and 412 N.m of torque at 4 000 r/min.
The 930 Turbo rocketed from zero to 100 km/h in 6,1 seconds and went on to complete a kilometer in 25,2 seconds. Top speed was 228 km/h.
