Back in 1997, Korean manufacturer SssangYong wasn’t a well-known entity in South Africa. We got our first proper look at the Musso SUV when it arrived in time for testing ahead of the December 1997 issue.
The Musso’s controversial styling left the CAR team divided, but all were in agreement that the 2,9 litre turbodiesel motor was a tad too vocal while not delivering enough grunt (95 kW, 294 N.m of torque). While it wallowed on the road due to the suspension damping and lifeless steering, it performed surprisingly well off-road due to its impressive ground clearance and all-wheel drive system.
