fuel consumption test

By: Peter Palm

Having just completed a long trip using the Peugeot 3008, fully loaded with a Thule roof box as well as towing a trailer, we started wondering what the effect on fuel consumption would be with the added aerodynamic drag and extra mass of these individually. What we are planning is to do our 150 km fuel route using the 3008 without appendages and then to repeat the run with the Thule Atlantis 780 and 75 kg of luggage. Next job would be to remove the roof box and the bars and hitch up the trailer with the same mass of luggage. We will try to keep wind and temperature fluctuations between test runs to a minimum but traffic impact will of course be slightly different for each run. Naturally the trailer can take a whole lot more luggage than the box, but it would still be interesting to obtain some figures. When completed we will run a short article in the magazine.
