The petrol price may drop in July, the department of mineral and energy affairs said on Monday, and the drop is said to be substantial.

A spokesman for the department, Hein Baak, said several factors, including a “big over-recovery”, could influence the drop in prices. Though not wanting to commit himself to a figure, Baak said since the department was in its fuel price review period, “anything was possible”.

On Monday, the SABC reported that Econometrix senior economist Tony Twine said the fuel price could drop by 20 cents.

Twine said the lower international oil price and firmer rand were both factors pushing the fuel price down.

Baak said if the current trend continued, the price was expected to drop even further in August.
