After stating that it was just a styling exercise, Toyota is likely to put its two-seater sports car, the FXS, into production next year.
Toyota’s two-seater sports car, the FXS, which was launched at the Tokyo Motor Show late last month, is likely to go into production next year.
Toyota initially said it had no plans to put the retro-inspired roadster into production, and that it was only a styling exercise. It was believed that the manufacturer could use some aspects of its design on other future cars.
But the Japanese manufacturer would like to showcase the car after it has entered Formula One next year. According to Auto Express magazine, Toyota is likely to make a firm decision after the first few grands prix of the season.
The FXS, which means Future Experimental Sports car, signals the manufacturer’s move to make more aggressive designs.
"There is DNA from the 1967 Toyota 2000GT, but the FXS has an individual style – an original design that’s simple and sexy," said Shigeaki Sugawara, project general manager of Tokyo Design Division. "The package pushes the four wheels to the corners of the car and the centre of gravity is as low as possible for very good stability."
It is powered by a 4,3-litre V8 and has a six-speed sequential gearbox. The fun-looking roadster has hints of the original F-Type concept along with a Tuscan R profile nose and a curvy body. It also has a protruding spoiler and aggressive looking lower air intakes. There is no provision for a top on the vehicle yet.
The full leather interior is highlighted by touches of chrome and bluish-white illuminated dials set within a deep blue background. It has an oval grille that is flanked by vertical headlights.
The FXS concept is very low and wide with a length of 4150 mm, width of 1870 mm and height of just 1100 mm.
According to Toyota, the FXS “caters to mature tastes, targeting adults with a deep interest in cars who believe that driving is one of life’s great pleasures".
