Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW share a fierce rivalry when it comes to the crowning jewels in each segment they compete in. Now, watch their most compact offerings go head-to-head in a drag race with the RS3, A 45 S and M240i in an all German assault.
Yes, we know, the G42 M240i isn’t really geared to compete with the two other hyper hatch rivals but this is as good as it gets until the new M2 comes out later this year. For now, Motorsport Magazine has put together this all German assault which includes an Audi RS3, Mercedes AMG A45 S and a BMW M240i xDrive.
On the technical front, all of these quarter mile competitors are equally matched when it comes to torque with 500 N.m pulsing through each all-wheel-drive system. The largest surprise is that the AMG A45 S produces the most power, from the least displacement and cylinders measuring in at a whopping 305 kW. This compact 2-litre turbocharged four-banger goes up against the likes of BMW’s 3-litre in-line six and Audi’s revered 2,5-litre in-line five. So, we have powertrain diversity but the least powerful of the lot is the one with the largest engine, topping power at 281 kW while the baby V10 from Audi is good for 291 kW.
On the weight side of things, none of these would be considered light however the lightest of the lot is the 1,612 kg Audi, with Mercedes hatch measuring next at 1,655 kg and the BMW coming in considerably more at 1,740 kg.
Until the new M2 joins BMW’s fleet, with its rumoured 336 kW of power, watch below to see how this all German assault unfolds.
