Although the excessive speeds required to break records could literally break the Opel Record that has been in your family for the past two decades, its Michelin Pilot Sport tyres will definitely be able go the distance. Just ask Koenigsegg, the current record holder…
In February, Koenigsegg’s CCR equipped with standard Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, set the official world speed record of 388 km/h at Italy’s Nardo test circuit.
Equipped with 255/35 ZR19 96Y Pilot Sport 2 TLs at the front, and 335/30 ZR20 104Ys at the rear, the 4,7-litre V8-powered car was able to break the McLaren F1’s 12-year record of 386,6 km/h, also set at the Nardo circuit.
To reach speeds close to 400 km/h with standard tyres, Michelin has developed a tyre that produces constant tyre geometry and consistent performance in any weather conditions. Even at high speeds, the tyre’s tread patterns inhibit centrifugal forces, controlling the tyre’s shape.
The tyres also have a lower rolling resistance compared with standard sport tyres, which also increases wet grip.
In addition to contributing to the CCR’s development, Michelin also assisted the Swedish sportscar manufacturer by providing its expertise in high-speed performance both before and during the attempt.
The Pilot Sport is used on other sportscars including the Porsche Carrera GT, Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren and the Pagani Zonda. And since these are standard tyres, they also meet Michelin’s own requirements for safety, wet and dry grip, ride comfort and tread life.
