GMSA is to develop a world class parts and accessories warehouse at its head office in Port Elizabeth.
As part of the company’s drive to improve the efficiency levels of its parts and accessories operations, the warehouse will be converted into a “true lean facility”.
“The upgraded warehouse and its operations will be modelled on those of other GM facilities around the globe,” Doug Harrison, GMSA after sales director, said.
A service parts operations project supervisor was sent from GM North America earlier this year to assess the company’s existing parts and accessories operations and to assist with the initial planning phase.
Extensive internal and external construction and upgrading is expected to take place. “Our target is to have the facility fully operational by April,” Harrison emphasised.
Most of the R16-million earmarked for the project will be used to hire local contractors.
“This ties in with our objective to, as far as possible, support the community in which we operate,” Harrison reiterated.
The completed facility will cover 5 600 m2 and house 30 000 different parts with state-of-the-art bar-coding equipment being used. A key feature is that the new warehouse’s IT will be integrated with existing systems for the management of national inventories.
