Hertz has secured what it claims to be the largest car rental contract in the country – a three-year deal with power utility company Eskom worth R70 million.
Hertz South Africa managing director Noel Nel told the contract, which has been in effect since June this year, was “certainly an endorsement of our ability to consistently deliver high standards of service and, more importantly, meet Eskom’s stringent requirements across various criteria”.
Laura Louw, Eskom’s distribution governance manager, said Eskom had followed “an extremely thorough procurement procedure” through a tender process, with competitive pricing an important criterion but by no means the determining factor.
“Complying to our service agreement is non-negotiable and we expect high levels of delivery from our suppliers to satisfy our own commitment to excellence,” Louw said.
Last year, Hertz clinched a 12-month agreement with Eskom, and had in that time structured its business to accommodate the massive volume generated by Eskom, Nel said.
New Africa Investments Limited, the top black empowerment group, holds a 60 per cent shareholding in Hertz, but Unitrans has management responsibility and runs it as a full subsidiary. Hertz increased its year-on-year turnover in its 2001/02 trading year by 67 per cent, and its fleet size grew by more than 35 per cent in the same period, Nel was quoted as saying.
