The Japanese hot hatch has taken to The Bend in the land Down under for a Honda Type R track record demonstration. The Limited Edition FK8 Honda Type R beat the standard version by just under a second after being driven by Tony D’Alberto.
Honda have been teasing the next-gen Civic Type R for a while now, with a funky looking wrap concealing the extremities of the car but the FK8 Honda Type R track record proves you can teach an old dog new tricks.
While rumours circulating state that the sixth generation FL2 Type R will officially be launched in 2022, former Super2 and Australian GT Endurance Champion Tony D’Alberto together with Honda Australia have set a new lap record at The Bend in Elwomple, South Australia.
A promotion video demonstrates the 36 year old driver hooning around in a Boost Blue Pearl Type R with the Mission of Lap Record Time Attack and setting a time of 2:13.251 around the 4.95-kilometer International Circuit. This broke the lap record for a front-wheel drive production car at The Bend momentarily.
After returning to the garages, the TCR Australia series runner-up then jumps into the Civic Type R Limited Edition finished in Sunlight Yellow Limited Edition which has been put on a 23 kilogram diet and includes BBS forged aluminium rims with sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber, revisited suspension damping and recalibrated steering.
The Limited Edition sets a time of 2:12.260 which is just under a second quicker than the standard version and thus breaks the track record once again.
Throughout its four year life cycle the hot hatch from Japan managed to set several lap records at international circuits but since production has concluded the Honda Type R track record proves you can teach an old dog new tricks. Big shoes to fill for its successor!
