Germiston’s Gosforth Park racecourse has been bought by a consortium and is being converted into what is tipped to be one of the world’s largest motorsport stadiums.
Gosforth Park Properties, a consortium consisting of prominent businessmen and motorsport personalities, aim to transform the racecourse into a motorsport park that will accommodate a one kilometre SASCAR oval, a 400 m sprint car and hot rod oval, a drag strip, a 2,6 km road racing circuit, motocross track, junior motocross track, quad and 4×4 tracks and a skid pan.
The last horse race at Gosforth Park was run in March and construction of the raceway began last week.
The project is expected to open in June next year and many of the facilities, such as broadcasting and catering, will be used as they are.
“Having been designed for horse racing, Gosforth Park, with all its up-market suites, lounges and facilities, will enable spectators to enjoy motorsport stadium-style”, Sascar (Southern Africa stock car auto racing) and F1 powerboat ace Peter Lindenberg, who is also the complex’s managing director, said this week.
Lindenberg plans to run 70 motorsport events a year, including road safety education courses, an advanced driving school, an international racing school (which will qualify successful candidates for an Sports Car Club of America licence), and team-building events.
A grandstand will seat about 6 500 spectators. The new complex will also have a gymnasium, an outdoor music stage, a bed-and-breakfast facility, a large flea market hosted by the Ekhuruleni community and a tea garden.
