The Hyundai Ioniq 5 wins the 2022 World Car of the Year adding to its impressive tally of awards. The retro-styled Korean hatch was accompanied by the Audi E-Tron GT, Mercedes-Benz EQS and the Toyota Yaris Cross as award winners.
The jury of the World Car Awards is made up of 100+ international individuals who reward and inspire automotive excellence. Now in its 18th year, the ceremonial awards include multiple categories which serve multiple different segments. Awards are handed out for World Car Design, World Luxury Car, World Performance Car, World Urban Car, World Electric Vehicle and World Car of the Year.
Of the three finalists for the World Car of the Year which also included the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Kia EV6 which shares the same platform as the Hyundai, the Ioniq EV took the overall honours. It also clenched the World Electric Vehicle of the Year title from the performance and luxury oriented Audi E-Tron GT and Mercedes-Benz EQS models.
Its third victory came in the form of the World Car Design category trumping over the Audi E-Tron GT and Kia EV6 once again. Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company stated: “We are truly honoured to receive these prestigious awards, which recognize the talent and hard work of all our people and business partners at Hyundai Motor Company,”
He further added “The pace of change at Hyundai will continue unabated through the rest of 2022 as we will soon be adding to our award-winning IONIQ range.” Hyundai is planning on expanding the Ioniq 5 range with a more performance-oriented N Variant which boasts larger brakes and tyres with a lower ride height. Powertrain information is still unofficial and rumours are scarce but the Kia EV6 which shares the platform is available with a maximum of 430 kW.
