In lieu of reducing the price of its entry level Matrix, Hyundai SA has introduced a more luxurious GLS version of the 1,6-litre mini MPV at the same price as its standard-spec predecessor.

For the GLS, the exterior of the Pininfarina-designed Matrix has been enhanced with roof rails, 15-inch alloy wheels and a boot spoiler with a high mounted brake light.

Inside, the driver’s seat has dual height adjusters and lumbar support, and all seats feature adjustable/removable headrests as well as sliding and reclining movement. The double folding feature of the rear seats (60:40 split design) effectively doubles the cargo space, the manufacturer claims.

There is also a cover for the cargo area, sunglass holder, a box under the cargo area, luggage side boxes, a multi-box next to the steering wheel and door map pockets, fold-up seatback trays, storage compartments under seats, cup holders and 12V power sockets between the front seats and in the cargo area.

In line with its GLS specification, the new model is equipped with leather seats, power steering, central locking, electric windows, air-conditioning, a six-speaker radio/CD combination audio system and remote fuel flap and boot release.

It retains its predecessor’s 1,6-litre alpha II engine mated with a five-speed gearbox. The DOHC four-cylinder aluminium powerplant generates 76 kW at 5 800 r/min and 141 N.m of torque at 4 500.

In terms of safety, the Matrix features side impact protection and dual heavy-duty centre floor cross members. Driver and passenger airbags are standard and the braking system (disks at front, drums in the rear) is equipped with ABS and EBD.

The 1,6 GLS Matrix costs R154 995, which includes a standard three-year/60 000 km maintenance plan.
