Hyundai has promised to launch a new model, such as the recently-unveiled Tucson 4×4, every six months for the next three years.
At the release of the Tucson at the Chicago Motor Show, Hyundai Motor America’s president Bob Cosmai stated that the Tucson represents a step towards Hyundai’s “improved product quality and image”. Reports have stated that the dash is neat with trim materials and finishing of an exceptional quality.
The world media launch is expected in May and the Tucson should arrive in South Africa in next year. It will supplement the Terracan and Santa Fe SUVs that are already available in the country. Hyundai said the Tucson should provide some competition to the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Nissan X-Trail and the Freelander from Land Rover.
The Tucson is said to be smaller than the Santa Fe and will be available in either front or all-wheel drive with a straight-four or V6 engine.
In the years leading to 2007, new models will include a people carrier and a larger SUV based on an all-new platform, according to Jong-Suh Park of Hyundai’s Design Centre.
Other models expected include a new five-door model to slot between the current Elantra and the Accent. The car will début in its concept form at the Geneva Motor show in March and will form the basis Hyundai’s next rally car.
Hyundai has also confirmed that it will build a coupé-cabriolet model, derived from the CCS concept car and possibly influenced by the HCD8 concept coupé shown in Detroit earlier this year.
In March, Hyundai SA will add a diesel version to its Getz supermini line-up. The 1,5-litre, three-cylinder, common-rail turbodiesel will have a potential top speed of 170km/hr and an estimated general fuel consumption of 4,8l/100km.
The five-door diesel Getz will come with full-house specification including two front air-bags, air-conditioning and central locking.
A 45 000km or two-year service plan is included in the price of R129 995.
