New Zealand boffins conducted a two-year study using data from 1 159 drivers. Using a host of factors, including the driver's age and the condition of the vehicle, their findings were recently published in the .

Using white as a control colour, it was found that silver cars were 50 per cent less likely than white to have seriously injured passengers.

While grey faired well too, dark and earthy colours did not do as well. Brown, black and green vehicles averaged 110, 100 and 80 per cent respectively in the test.

Yellow and red cars were also found to be risky colours, mainly because they were typically chosen for faster cars and by younger drivers.
