What are purported to be leaked images of the eagerly awaited Volkswagen Golf 7 have found their way onto the Internet shortly ahead of the car’s official unveiling in Berlin.
The images posted on German motoring website Autozeitung.de are somewhat mysterious in their origins and there are a number of question marks surrounding their authenticity, but the exterior shot does appear to adhere to earlier reports of the Golf 7 featuring a lower, wider stance and sharper, if somewhat evolutionary, styling.
The interior shots are a bit of a mixed bag – the blacked out footwells and photoshopped hands seem a bit contrived, but the nature of the switchgear and a high-set, driver-oriented angling of the facia do seem to gel with what we already know of the car.
Although the Golf 7 will be appreciably larger than the current model, it will make use of weight-saving construction methods to shave roughly 100 kg off the car's weight, as well as a raft of efficiency-boosting technologies to pare down fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
The initial engine line-up will reportedly comprise a turbocharged 1,4-litre four-cylinder direct injection petrol unit with cylinder deactivation developing 103 kW and a 1,6-litre commonrail diesel with 78 kW on tap. Coupled with an updated version of the company’s 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, Volkswagen claims that the 1,4-litre petrol unit will return an average fuel consumption figure of around 4,8 L/100 km while emitting 112 g/km of CO2. The diesel will return around 4,0 L/100 km while bringing emissions down below the 100 g/kg mark.
Volkswagen will also preview the Golf 7 GTI at the Paris Motor Show later this month. This model is likely to feature a direct-injection 2,0-litre turbopetrol unit developing 165 kW.
